The Girl on the Train: My Solo Interrail Journey

“I changed job and cities”. No, just cities and contrary to Bukowski, I loved it.

I packed my bag, I smiled at the mirror, I felt ready, and then just left.
I took a first train to Amsterdam. It was the beginning of the adventure.
I needed a breath of fresh air. I needed to be challenged, to confront myself.

And I did.
But not as easily as I had imagined.
Pretty quickly, I fell into deep introspection.
I could sense the loneliness with my whole body. I had no familiar marks to hold onto.

I thought I would visit museums and parks,
what I didn’t realize is that I was entering my inner city.

In Berlin, I fell sick, but I  fully enjoyed the hotel, the peace, the pause.

In Prague, everything changed.
The hostel was very charming, as was my neighbor.
We met, we played, talked, and laughed.
It was quite wonderful.
A brief but impactful encounter.
Later, we met again in Paris, for the last time…

He was Dutch and I was French.
We were the same age.
And somehow, something resonated between us.
However, it was just an ephemeral travel moment. A pretty one I must say.

When we met again in Paris, everything changed.
We said our final goodbyes.
I could feel the distance, even as we talked. And when he left, it felt like the end of a dream, I hadn’t even realized I was dreaming.

Vienna.
Vienna was my favorite.
The architecture, the museums, the garden, the palace, the streets.
Everything was out of time.

I met many lovely people in Vienna.
We had those long night talks that, you know, you will only get in such rare context.

I loved Vienna.
I loved the hostel, my quiet morning coffee routine, then the walk to the garden, a museum discovery or a new district visit.

I was supposed to end with Genoa, but I had an unexpected stop at Innsbruck.
And I don’t regret it one bit.
This city, with its streets and the view on the Swiss Alps everywhere…
It is incredibly beautiful.

Finally, Genoa.
I enjoyed the Italian slow life, the beach, the food, the peace and rested.

During this whole journey, I asked myself a hundred questions, got a hundred answers.
It’s not as easy as we would think ; you have to be brave to face yourself.
And I didn’t know that before I  left.

Now I don’t regret a thing.
I loved it as messy and pretty as it was.
