How artificial intelligence, digital money and the energy transition are reshaping the way we define value.
At 24, I don’t really fear the future, not its technologies, not its promises of progress. Robots, crypto, or the energy transition do not frighten me. What unsettles me lies elsewhere: war, institutions, and money, not for what it is, but for what it can make people become.
Artificial intelligence, cryptocurrencies, and the energy transition are no longer distant ideas. They already shape how we work, exchange, and imagine what comes next. What seems to be changing most is not only technology itself, but the way we define what is valuable.
The world feels unstable yet constantly in motion. Technology often moves faster than our collective ability to decide what we actually want from it. And this is where the real question begins.
Energy, Law, and the Weight of Reality

Yet beneath the noise, something real is happening. Investment flows are shifting, regulations evolving, and industries slowly reorganising themselves.
The European Union’s decarbonisation targets for 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050 have gradually moved from political ambition to corporate strategy, pushing companies to rethink how growth and sustainability can coexist.
Large energy companies, such as Shell, illustrate how complex this transition can be. Decarbonisation targets increasingly shape corporate strategies, yet the path toward implementation remains negotiated, contested, and far from linear.
The Dutch climate litigation brought by Milieudefensie against Shell reflects an important shift. Arguments grounded in corporate duty of care were interpreted through the lens of fundamental rights, showing how climate responsibility is progressively framed not only as an environmental or economic issue, but as a question connected to human rights.
This evolution reveals something deeper: sustainability is no longer discussed solely in terms of policy or market incentives. It increasingly enters the legal sphere as a matter of responsibility and protection.

Progress rarely emerges on its own; it requires structures, negotiation, and legal frameworks capable of turning ambition into implementation.
As a legal counsel aiming to specialise in energy and climate law, I am particularly interested in this space where intention becomes obligation, where political vision becomes operational reality.
The transition is not only about producing cleaner energy, but about storing it. Batteries and storage technologies reshape our relationship with energy, turning it into something managed across time rather than consumed instantly. Energy stops being merely produced; it becomes something we carry forward.
Yet tensions remain. The extraction of raw materials reminds us that technological solutions are never neutral. If the transition is meant to be sustainable, ethical sourcing and environmental responsibility must remain part of the equation. Progress moves forward, but never without trade-offs.
Artificial Intelligence and the Question of Responsibility

Contradictions appear everywhere. We invest in renewable energy while building data centres that consume enormous amounts of electricity and water. For some, this contradiction alone justifies rejecting artificial intelligence. I do not see it that way.
Despite these doubts, solutions are beginning to emerge. Smaller and more efficient models are being developed, capable of strong performance while reducing energy demand. New approaches to data-centre location and cooling are also being explored, including installations in cooler or more humid environments that allow natural cooling, limiting water consumption and reducing pressure on local communities.
Behind the headlines about ever-larger models, a quieter shift is taking place. Engineers are increasingly focused on optimisation, doing more with less, refining architectures, compressing models, and questioning whether scale alone truly defines intelligence.

AI does not simply replace human work; more often, it accompanies it. It reshapes tasks, decision-making, and collaboration between humans and machines. And that may be where the real shift begins.
Artificial intelligence is being regulated even as it evolves. Societies are trying to balance innovation, risk, and responsibility at the same time, an inevitably imperfect process. Questions around transparency, data usage, and resource consumption remain central. Progress rarely arrives finished; it advances through correction and refinement.
The deeper transformation may be intellectual. In trying to build intelligent systems, we are forced to reconsider what thinking, understanding, or decision-making actually mean. Defining intelligence outside ourselves often brings us back to the mystery of our own cognition.
Crypto: From People’s Currency to Institutional Integration
A similar dynamic exists with cryptocurrencies.

At first, crypto felt like a people’s currency, a space where value could circulate outside traditional institutions. Beyond speculation, it introduced ideas of decentralisation, ownership, and new forms of digital exchange. For many, it became an entry point into financial education, reshaping their relationship with money itself.
Over time, institutions entered the space and speculation intensified. The European Union has begun structuring the ecosystem through frameworks such as MiCA and DAC8. For some, this reduces the freedom that once defined crypto culture. For others, it brings clarity and long-term stability.
What stood outside institutions is learning to coexist with them.
Beyond finance, blockchain technology also introduced new ways of authenticating transactions and proving ownership. The possibility of recording exchanges in a traceable and tamper-resistant way has opened discussions far beyond speculation, from digital identity to legal proof and certification. In that sense, crypto did not only challenge monetary systems; it also questioned how trust itself can be built in digital environments.
Everyday usage has shifted as well. Crypto-linked payment cards still exist through regulated platforms, but several early programmes have disappeared or scaled back in Europe. Crypto has not vanished from daily payments; it is gradually being absorbed into regulated financial infrastructure.

Governments, meanwhile, are integrating digital assets through taxation and oversight while exploring their own digital currencies. In China, where platforms like WeChat Pay and Alipay already dominate daily transactions, the digital yuan feels less like a rupture than a continuation. In Europe, the European Central Bank’s work on a digital euro reflects a different context but a similar ambition, adapting money to a digital economy.
The line between innovation and institution grows increasingly thin.
Ethics, Markets, and the Construction of Value
These transformations are not purely technological. They reshape expectations of corporate behaviour and responsibility. Duty-of-vigilance frameworks that emerged after the Rana Plaza collapse in 2013 show how crises can transform ethical debates into legal obligations. Likewise, regulations such as the SFDR encourage institutions to integrate environmental criteria into investment decisions, redirecting capital toward what societies begin to define as sustainable value.
Law does not stop innovation. It redirects it.
And innovation does not happen in isolation. While these technological shifts are exciting, they are also unsettling. Economic anxiety, geopolitical conflict, and global uncertainty remind us that technology expands possibilities but does not resolve deeper human tensions. Markets react to fear as much as to optimism.
This is where excitement and concern coexist.
Rethinking Value
Seen together, these technologies point toward the same underlying question: how is value defined in a changing world?
Technology evolves quickly. Markets follow incentives. Companies follow value. Yet value itself is never fixed. Institutions, regulation, and collective choices continually reshape what is considered desirable, responsible, or worth pursuing.
Progress does not have to be driven solely by profit. It can also reflect collective decisions about sustainability, responsibility, and the kind of future we are willing to build.
Perhaps the real question is not whether progress should slow down or accelerate, but which values we choose to carry forward, and what that choice reveals about who we are becoming.
Maybe the future is less a question of fear or excitement than of the position we decide to take toward it.
