You left me suspended
like after a dream
you partially remember,
but that wakes you up
hot in the night,
the breath short,
the body electric,
before it starts shivering.
You were a wonder,
a code to decipher,
and I couldn’t guess.
Your words made
me melt.
But the edge of your smile
cut through my veins.
And each time you laughed,
I never knew
if I could share it
or if it simply meant
you were laughing at me.
Your body would get closer
and then retreat,
at the frontier of mystery.
But for her you’d open your arms,
watching me,
smiling sharply.
When it was just you and me,
you’d talk to me sweet.
Then they were there,
and you’d start pretending
as if you barely knew me.
You’d spend hours
talking about your new choice
that wasn’t me,
when in public,
to watch me then
with the softest eyes
in intimacy.
She was perfect, you’d say aloud,
while I was cute,
but weird and poor.
